MANUAL THERAPIES
Veterinary Physiotherapists use their hands to manipulate, mobilise and massage your animal's body tissues while decreasing pain and swelling and increasing joint and soft tissue mobility. Manual therapies involve massage and manipulation/stretching. There are various massage techniques used to treat a variety of conditions. These techniques include effleurage, vibration, compression, petrissage, friction, myofascial release and tapotement. Stretching helps elongating muscle fibres while decreasing tightness and restrictions.
ELECTROTHERAPIES
Electrotherapies are used by veterinary physiotherapists in conjunction with manual therapies to provide pain relief, promote musculoskeletal and soft tissue healing and stimulate the muscles function.
EXERCISE PRESCRIPTION
Veterinary Physiotherapists will prescribe home exercises specifically tailored to your animal for you to carry out in your own time. These exercises aim at improving joint mobility, muscle function and they are beneficial in supporting your animal between physiotherapy sessions.
STRETCHING EXERCISES
Passive stretching consists in the handler physically moving the animal's limb slowly through its entire range of movement till it reaches the point of resistance. Stretching exercises help to restore and maintain the horse's full range of movement to improve performance as well as reduce injury to joints, muscles and soft tissues and developing further elasticity and flexibility. These exercises may also help the horse relax, reduce muscular tension and stiffness and help increase the circulation of blood and lymph fluids.
